Welcome to Class 5!
Class teacher: Mrs Barker
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Lofts & Miss Van Niekerk
What a fantastic start to Year 2! The children in Class 5 have settled in excellently and we have learned so much already! Our class teacher is Mrs Barker but we also have the pleasure of Mrs Lofts’ help in some of our lessons, Miss Van Neikerk and Miss Davies. We will continue to have extra support of our inhouse PE experts – Megan, Luke and Miss Wade. We have P.E. on a Thursday afternoon which makes for a very fun end to the week!
In English our topic is Amazing Africa. We have already started reading ‘Meerkat Mail’ and we are enjoying learning about Sunny’s family dynamics and the habitat in which they live.
We are also excited to read ‘Little People, Big Dreams, Nelson Mandela’, and ‘Little People, Big Dream, Martin Luther King’, and ‘One Day on our Blue Planet… in the Savannah’. We are developing our knowledge of the Year 2 spelling rules through the use of Spelling Shed in school and at home.
Class 5 have returned from the Christmas break with fire in their tummies, ready to make waves in Maths this term. We are moving on to exploring multiplication and division, money, statistics, properties of shape and length and height as well as tackling reasoning and problem-solving activities in our lessons to ensure we gain a deeper understanding of the Maths topics we are introduced to. We will link some of our newfound mathematical knowledge to different subject areas, in order to apply our mathematical skills to real-life situations.
We are going to aim to improve our already amazing knowledge of the 2-, 5-, 10- and 3-times tables in a fun and engaging way through using Times Table Rock Stars in school and at home. Class 5 love the competitiveness of practicing their times tables in this way, which is helping us to build fluency in our multiplication – a remarkable and important skill to have! We are going to challenge ourselves to use this knowledge to solve missing number multiplication and division questions using the inverse rule.
We are very excited to beginning our journey to Africa in Geography! We are going to explore the climate, the animals which live there and their culture. We will be comparing this to the UK, thinking about the position of the countries in relation to the equator.
We have a very busy but fun-packed term ahead. We cannot wait to share our achievements and knowledge with you in the coming weeks.
