STEM

As part of our curriculum, we have a growing focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). On moving to the new school site, we opened our own STEM Lab which is accessed by classes from all key stages. Our commitment is to prepare children for future careers by introducing them to STEM opportunities in the form of projects, themed weeks and working with local businesses.

All children in our school have opportunities to develop and grow in STEM. We encourage children to develop their critical thinking, problem-solving and team-work skills through exciting, engaging and creative practical activities and projects.

We have many STEM activities taking place across the school year including: an exciting “Scrapheap Challenge” day where Foundation Stage and Year 1 children worked in teams to create structures out of different materials. Children in Year 2 enjoyed taking part in an animation workshop along with a Lego Robotics session in school. Children in Year 3 and 4 attended STEM events at Inspire2Learn as well as working with Teesside High School to explore living things in our environment and beyond. In Year 5 children built board games, designed and flew kites and constructed bird boxes with the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust. Year 6 worked hard to construct their own car and raced it at Croft Circuit!

Our STEM Inspiration Week was a huge success and we were fortunate to be able to work with different experts from STEM careers including scientists from Teesside University, computing experts from Durham University, chemists from Venator Corp, local GPs from Skerne Medical Group and Science Boffins. Our STEAM Inspiration Week was featured in the local press and you can see the news report which featured our work on ITV News below.
