Class 14- Year 6

Welcome to Class 14!

Class teacher: Mr Dixon

Teaching Assistant: Mrs McRitchie

Here we go! We have already made a great start to Year 6 in Class 14. The children are focussed and aware of the challenges (and triumphs) that await! Have no doubt, Year 6 is tough, but we will make it through together as a team and we will look back knowing that we have come so far.

This term, we have some very interesting topics to launch into which will keep us engaged and very busy up until Christmas. We will be focussing on the novel, ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar in English initially, practising both reading and writing skills we already have whilst learning some new ones. We will then launch into looking at some Worl War 1 poetry, analysing what this tells us about life during this difficult period in Great Britain.

Our topic this term is ‘The Americas’, where we will learn about the geography, both physical and human, and will even look at natural disasters, how and where they occur in real life. In addition, we will look at land-use across The Americas, biomes and their discovery by Christopher Columbus.

In maths, we will begin by looking at place value, before using this to help in our work involving the four operations. This work will consolidate what we know already but will also teach us some new (and challenging) ways to use these in our reasoning and problem solving. Finally, we will look at fractions, decimals and percentages and their relationships within mathematics. We will also experience some past SATs papers to see what we are aiming for by the end of the year.

This term’s unit in Science will focus on genetics and inheritance – another very interesting topic! We will consider whether features are inherited (genetic) or environmentally influenced and learn about evolution (including Darwin’s finches) and natural selection.

In Art and indeed Design Technology, we will be exploring sculpture and architecture and meeting a design brief to create a new statue or building for The Americas – we will even have the chance to get messy and hone our skills in using Mod-Roc. In addition, we will be investigating pulleys to help one of the characters in our novel in their day-to-day tasks.

Religious Education this term will look at the debate of ‘creation vs science’, considering the beliefs of Christians and scientists on how the world was created. We will also look at why some people believe in God whilst others do not or are not sure. We will consider the reasons for this.

This term’s PE will take place in school with our sports coaches Olly, Megan and Luke. Alongside excellent trampolining, gymnastics and swimming sessions, we will be looking at tag rugby and invasion games within school.

Finally, in PHSE, we will consider how the media may influence us in our day-to-day lives. We will think about ‘fake news’ and how this can be used to manipulate the public, and consider how we can spot aspects in the digital world that are perhaps not what they seem.

Let’s start the year with a bang! We will need grit, tenacity and loads of effort but we will be successful, I’m sure!
