British Values Statement

At Wynyard Church of England Primary School, our vision of “Growing Together in Life in All Its Fullness” inspires everything we do. We aim to nurture each child’s academic, personal, and spiritual development so that they can flourish as confident, caring, and responsible members of society.

In living out this vision, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values help our pupils to grow together and live life to the full, both within our school community and beyond. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British society and to the world and the wider world.

Democracy

We teach children that their voices matter. Through our pupil leadership groups, pupil surveys, and class discussions, our pupils learn to listen, debate, and contribute to shared decisions. This helps them understand that everyone can play a part in shaping the community we grow together in.

We uphold the British value of Democracy by:

• facilitating a democratic process for electing pupil leadership roles, including school councillors and the running of the council.
• teaching about the democratic process in Britain, at both a local and national level. We teach about communities and pressure groups, how children can participate in these and make changes to life at all levels from local to global.
• facilitating visits from local politicians for children to learn more about democratic systems.
• as part of their residential in Year 5, pupils have the opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament and learn more about the democratic systems at a local and national level.

The Rule of Law

Children learn why rules are important in helping us to live well together. Our school values reinforce fairness, justice, and safety—helping pupils to make wise choices and take responsibility for their actions.

We uphold the British value of the Rule of Law by:

• teaching children an understanding of human rights, in particular the UNICEF rights of the child.
• teaching children to learn about the process of law-making and the part that citizens can play in that process.
• implementing our procedures and protocols for dealing with any behavioural or bullying issues and the very rare incidents of racial, homophobic and other forms of discrimination, which demonstrates to pupils that we take these issues very seriously, mirroring the attitudes of British society.

Individual Liberty

We encourage pupils to make their own choices within a safe and supportive environment. By understanding their rights and responsibilities, children develop confidence and self-belief, learning to use their freedom to live life in all its fullness.

We uphold the British value of individual liberty by:

• teaching children to take responsibility for their own behaviour
• teaching an understanding of the concept of freedom and choice.
• teach children how to safely exercise their rights and personal freedoms
• teaching children an understanding of human rights
• support our pupils to become as independent as possible, including through our PSHE lessons and experiences such as residentials.
• exposing children to a range of experiences and future career opportunities

Mutual Respect

Respect is central to our relationships and to our vision of growing together. Pupils learn that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, fairness, and understanding. Through our curriculum, collective worships, and everyday interactions, we celebrate achievements and value each person’s uniqueness.

Tolerance of Others with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We celebrate the diversity of our school community and beyond. Through Religious Education, collective worship, and cultural events, pupils develop appreciation and understanding of different faiths and worldviews. This helps them to live harmoniously and grow into compassionate global citizens.

We uphold the British value of mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs:

• providing our extra-curricular provision, which offers equal opportunities for all children, boys and girls, and children with Special Educational Needs in sport and other areas.
• holding discussions in RE, English and other subjects, which allow children to develop respect for the opinions, values and beliefs of others.
• teaching our RE curriculum, which inculcates values of understanding, tolerance and respect for others, including those of other faiths.

At Wynyard Church of England Primary School, British Values are not taught in isolation—they are lived out through our vision of “Growing Together in Life in All Its Fullness.” Together, we are building a community where every child can thrive, contribute, and live a life filled with purpose and joy.
