Class 3- Year 1

Welcome to Class 3!

Class teacher: Mr Llewellyn

Teaching Assistants: Miss Wade & Miss Van Niekerk

Year 1 have made a fantastic start to the year, and we have learned lots of interesting things already. Our class teachers are Mr Llewellyn (Class 3) and Miss Huntley (Class 4) and we are very lucky to have Miss Home, Miss Wade and Miss Van Niekerk helping us with our learning as well. We really enjoy PE lessons with our sports coach, Olly, and Music lessons with one of our music specialists, Mr Ingledew.

In English, we take part in ‘Curious Quests’. Each week, we read a story book. So far, we have read ‘Alan’s Terrifying Teeth’, ‘The Stinky Cheese Man’, ‘Princess Smartypants’ and ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybird’. Each quest, we try to help Professor Klunk fix his dream machine by learning and using new ‘magic words’ linked to the story book of the week. We also learn and use features of the Year 1 English curriculum to help Professor Klunk fix his dream machine. We really enjoy taking part in ‘Curious Quests’ and it reflects in our writing.

Year 1 have learned lots in Maths so far this year and are very confident in their knowledge of place value within 10 and 20. This term, we are learning about place value within 50. We are going to practise counting from 20 to 50 and explore how to partition numbers within 50 in different ways. We are also excited to use our maths resources to explore length, height, volume, and mass.

In History, we are diving into ‘The Great Fire of London’. We are excited to learn about how Londoners lived in Tudor times and use historical sources to find out how the fire started, spread, and stopped. We will use the diary of Samuel Peppys to help us do this.

In Art, we are learning the art of Chinese Block Printing. We have practised printing with our hands and vegetables and are excited to carve a Chinese symbol into a potato to create an authentic Chinese block print.

Year 1 have had an excellent Autumn term and have risen to the challenge. We are very excited about the learning ahead and are ready to get stuck in.
