Welcome to Year 5!
We’re excited to begin a new academic year with our enthusiastic Year 5 learners. This year promises to be full of discovery, growth, and memorable experiences as we dive deeper into the curriculum and continue to build on the key foundations which were laid in previous years.
In Year 5, children will explore a rich and varied curriculum designed to challenge and inspire. Our English lessons focus on developing confident readers and expressive writers through engaging texts and purposeful writing opportunities. During Maths lessons in the Autumn term, pupils will strengthen their understanding of Place Value, whilst applying their skills to a range of problem-solving and reasoning tasks.
Our wider curriculum includes exciting topics in Science, History, Geography, Art, and Design Technology, encouraging curiosity and creativity. This includes our science unit, living things and their habitats, as we explore our key question, ‘How do living things grow, reproduce and change throughout their life cycle?’. In Geography, Year 5 will begin to explore Mexican Land Use as we learn about the location of Mexico, land use in different areas and topographic representations of land. Children will also continue to develop their computing skills, learn about online safety, and enjoy physical education sessions that promote teamwork and healthy lifestyles. In Year 5, PE takes place on a Monday, and children should have their PE kit in school for this session.
During our first Autumn term in PSHE, Year 5 will be covering the topic, ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with the key question, ‘What makes up our identity?’. Within this unit, we explore personal identity, the similarities and differences between people and stereotypes which can impact and negatively influence communities. We then move on, in Autumn 2, to exploring the key question, ‘What decisions can people make with money?’ as we learn about economic wellbeing and living in the wider world.
We place a strong emphasis on personal development, encouraging independence, resilience, and a growth mindset. Through worship opportunities, PSHE workshop sessions and enrichment activities, children are supported in becoming thoughtful, respectful, and responsible members of our school community.
We look forward to a fantastic year ahead with our new Year 5 cohort!
