Making a Difference

At Wynyard Church of England Primary School, we believe every child can make a positive difference in the world. We encourage our pupils to become courageous advocates — people who stand up for what is right and help others, both in our local community, nationally and around the world.

Life sometimes brings challenges, and we all need support to grow and thrive. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10), and we want all our children to experience that full and flourishing life in line with our vision.

We teach our children that everyone deserves kindness, care, and support — no matter who they are, where they are from, or what difficulties they face. Through Bible stories, Christian teaching, and learning about real-life courageous advocates from all walks of life, our pupils are inspired to take action and show compassion.

To celebrate this important part of our Christian vision, we learn about courageous individuals in lessons and collective worships, and we enjoy sharing pupils’ and staff’s own efforts to make a difference through celebration worships, our weekly newsletter and displays across school.

We also have a ‘Making a Difference’ after school club, who plan activities to make a positive difference to school, the local community and the wider world.

Throughout the year, we undertake many projects with the aim of making a positive difference including, local and beach litter picks, fundraising for charity and events with the local care home. We are also exceptionally proud of our pupils who come up with so many amazing ideas to make a positive difference to the lives of others. Some examples of which can be seen below.

Our Year 6 Making a Difference Club organised a Macmillan Coffee Morning in the Autumn term. They baked a range of sweet treats before selling them to staff to raise money for Macmillan.

One of our Year 5 pupils, George, organised a fundraising event for Young Lives vs Cancer, which is a charity very close to his heart. With the help of our whole school community, George raised over £1000!

Lottie in Year 3 made the decision that she would like to donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust and, recently, she had her cut to send to the charity.

One of our Year 5 children, Nell, has raised money for charity with her friend by making bracelets and selling them to their neighbours.  They then used the money to buy toys to donate to the ‘Love, Amelia’ charity.

Our school council organised a whole-school collection for Stockton and Billingham Food Bank. One of our pupils, Miles, in Year 6, also suggested we have a permanent donation box in the school entrance for families to donate when they can.

One of our Year 6 pupils Archie, organised a charity football to not only raise funds but to also raise awareness for The Haemophilia Society and the specialist Haemophilia Centre at the RVI in Newcastle, charities which are incredibly close to Archie and his families hearts. Archie has also been raising awareness in school by teaching children about haemophilia and how it affects people with the condition. We are all so proud of Archie and his ongoing work to raise awareness of haemophilia and to raise money for charities which support those affected by haemophilia!

We are incredibly proud of Holly in who donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust to support children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other conditions.

Poppy and Scarlett are passionate about making a difference and have raised lots for Cancer Research UK in memory of their grandad. The girls have completed Race For Life events and organised other fundraisers and even grew their hair to be cut off to create wigs for those going through cancer treatment. The girls had their hair cut in front of the whole school to inspire others to make a difference.
