Vine Church Wynyard
A church community growing with our school and village
Wynyard is a growing and vibrant place. Until recently, there had never been a church community meeting regularly in the village, though as a school we have long had links with churches nearby.
In 2020, at the invitation of the Diocese of Durham (part of the Church of England), Revd Emily and Revd Mark Hudghton began Vine Church Wynyard, which meets here at Wynyard Church of England Primary School.
Our partnership with Vine Church
Vine Church plays an active role in the life of our school. Revd Emily and Revd Mark and their team:
· Lead collective worship in school on a regular basis, often alongside our pupil Worship Leaders.
· Support school activities and events, including key festivals in the Christian calendar.
· Contribute to our ethos by modelling our school values and offering age-appropriate opportunities to explore faith, hope and community.
· Offer pastoral support to pupils, families and staff when appropriate, working closely with school leaders.
A number of the families at Wynyard Primary School are part of the Vine Church community.
Vine Church’s Vision
One historical meaning of the word Wynyard in Old English is vineyard. In the Bible, Jesus says: “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15:5). From this, Vine Church takes its name and its vision: to be rooted in Jesus, to grow together in community, and to bear good fruit – expressing God’s love in action here in Wynyard.
Sunday Gatherings
Vine Church meets on our school site on the first Sunday of every month, creating a welcoming space for children, young people and adults to worship together, explore the Christian faith, and celebrate what God is doing in the community.
These monthly ‘Celebration Sunday’ gatherings are friendly and relaxed, designed to welcoming for all ages and needs, with Bible readings, short talks, sung worship and creative ways to respond. Everyone is welcome – whether you have a church background or are just curious.
On the other Sundays of the month, the church meets in smaller groups across our community – gathering in homes to deepen friendships, grow in faith, and learn together to live out the way of Jesus in their everyday lives.
The church also runs mid-week activities, including a youth group, and regularly partners with other organisations within Wynyard such as the Care Home.
