Spirituality
What Is Spirituality?
At Wynyard, we recognise that spirituality is deeply personal—it can look and feel different for each individual and may evolve throughout a person’s life. We believe spirituality is central to a life well-lived, helping each child, and adults, grow in heart, mind, and soul.
Rooted in our Christian foundation, we are committed to nurturing the whole child. This means supporting their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development as part of a rich and reflective educational experience.
As a Church of England school, spirituality is woven throughout our curriculum and wider school life. It enables our children to:
- Reflect on their own beliefs—religious or otherwise.
- Develop curiosity and appreciation for the beliefs, values, and experiences of others.
- Grow in self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
- Use their imagination and creativity to explore ideas.
- Experience moments of stillness, awe, and wonder.
- Think deeply about themselves, their place in the world, and their relationships with others.
What Does Spirituality Mean to Our Children?
For our pupils, spirituality means becoming more aware—of themselves, of others, and of something greater than themselves. It involves reflection, empathy, curiosity, and a sense of purpose.
By nurturing spirituality, we help children:
- Build confidence and self-esteem.
- Develop compassion and empathy for others.
- Appreciate beauty and mystery in the world around them.
- Feel connected—to each other, to nature, and to God.
Spiritual development happens across all areas of school life—through relationships, values, learning experiences, and the environment we create together.
How Do We Foster Spirituality?
We provide a wide range of opportunities to support and deepen children’s spiritual growth, including:
- Daily Collective Worship, offering space for prayer, reflection, and shared values.
- Weekly Celebration Worship, recognising and rejoicing in achievements and contributions.
- Dedicated reflection areas in every classroom, encouraging quiet thought and prayer throughout the day.
- Prayer spaces and moments of stillness, giving children time to pause and connect.
- Stories, discussions and role play, helping children express and explore feelings and ideas.
- Creative arts, including music, drama, art and dance, to spark imagination and personal expression.
- Time spent in nature, particularly through our Forest School, where awe and wonder are inspired by the natural world.
- Exploration of moral values, rooted in our core Christian values of Love, Faith, Forgiveness and Wisdom.
- Random Acts of Kindness, promoting compassion, empathy and service to others.
- Cross-curricular links, ensuring spiritual development is embedded in all subjects.

Our approach to spirituality reflects our belief that every child is unique and deeply valued. By nurturing the spiritual dimension of life, we aim to equip our children not just for academic success, but for lives filled with meaning, purpose, and joy.
